More power of action: SCC has added a fourth division to its case administration

The SCC is expanding with a recently established fourth division for case administration up and running. Ulrika Svarts, Case Administrator at the SCC Secretariat, tells us about high standards, a commitment to service and quality assurance.

The SCC Secretariat has grown from three to four divisions, each consisting of a legal counsel and a case administrator. Ulrika Svarts has worked as a case administrator for five years and has extensive experience of arbitration proceedings.

Ulrika, what does the expansion mean for you in your daily work?
The fourth division is a very welcome addition to the SCC team of case managers. The SCC is a dynamic institute which sets high standards for our administration, introducing new tools and taking the lead in digitalizing international arbitration. In addition, our case load has increased over the years and the scope of our administration has too. By expanding the team we safeguard our ability to continue to develop our services in line with our ambitions.

Personally, I see the opportunity to develop professionally by contributing to new and exciting projects ahead and to continue to ensure the quality of the case administration.

Tell us about your job as a case administrator!
I work closely with Legal Counsel Raffaela Isepponi. When administrating a case I make sure that deadlines are kept, payments are made and communicate with the legal counsel in charge of the next step of the proceedings. Our objective is to ensure that the arbitration proceedings are conducted in an efficient and expedient manner in accordance with the SCC Rules.

All cases at the SCC are administrated on the SCC Platform. What are the functionalities and features of this digital work tool?
The SCC Platform was launched in September 2019 as a secure and efficient digital platform for communication and file sharing between the SCC, the parties and the tribunal. We were actually the first international institute to develop an online management platform. Since then, over 2,000 unique users have been conducting arbitrations on the SCC Platform!

The platform provides many features in order to facilitate communications during the proceedings. A notice board function enables the tribunal to post practical information to parties throughout the proceedings. Another example is the calendar which is compatible with Microsoft Outlook and all participants receive a notification when a file is uploaded. It is the parties’ choice to use the SCC Platform for secure storage of a complete file of the case materials and as an archive for a year after the arbitration is terminated. However, the SCC will communicate with the parties and tribunal through the platform, why some interaction with the SCC Platform is necessary on the part of each participating party and the tribunal.

At the SCC we are all very invested in the development of this online work method and are continuously developing new functionalities to improve the user experience – for us case administrators, and for the parties, lawyers and arbitrators using it. This is another aspect of my job that I really enjoy.
